The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is Spain’s main residency route for retirees and the financially independent — and renewing it correctly is what turns a one-year experiment into the five-year path to permanent residency.

The first NLV is granted for one year; the first renewal extends to two years; the second renewal extends to two more years. After five years of legal residency, you can apply for long-term (permanent) residency.

Get the renewal wrong and you reset the clock or worse, lose your right to remain.

The Renewal Document Checklist

The renewal file mirrors the original application but adds proof you have actually lived in Spain.

Bring: a valid passport (with at least one year of validity remaining), the original NLV residence card, proof of continued passive income at the threshold (approximately 2,400 EUR/month for 2026), comprehensive private health insurance covering Spain, a clean criminal record certificate (apostilled if issued abroad), and proof of address (empadronamiento).

The renewal is filed with the Oficina de Extranjeria in your province, not at a consulate.

Time Abroad — The Rule That Trips Up Most Renewals

The biggest renewal failure is over-absence. NLV holders cannot spend more than six consecutive months outside Spain in any given year, and cannot accumulate more than ten months outside Spain over the first five years of residency. Stay within these limits and you renew without problems and reach permanent residency at year five. Cross them — for example, seven consecutive months abroad, or twelve months total over five years — and you risk losing your residency and starting over.

Proving Your Income at Renewal

Income proof is what most renewal officers scrutinise hardest. Acceptable evidence includes pension statements, dividend records, rental income certificates, bank statements showing 12 months of consistent inflows, and tax returns from your home country. The threshold is approximately 2,400 EUR/month for 2026, plus a higher figure where you are renewing for dependents (children or spouse). Income must be passive — earned income from work for Spanish or foreign clients does not qualify.

Health Insurance — Public-Equivalent Coverage

The renewal requires comprehensive private health insurance equivalent to Spanish public health coverage, with no co-payments, no waiting periods, and no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Travel insurance does not qualify. Insurance bought through the major Spanish insurers (Sanitas, Adeslas, DKV, Asisa) for the NLV-specific product is the safest path. The policy must be valid through the end of the renewal period requested.

The checklist tells you what to file. How long the renewal then runs is a separate question, and a widely repeated claim that renewals had moved to four years sent a lot of people to the wrong answer. how long an NLV renewal actually lasts

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I file the renewal?

You can file from 60 days before the current card expires and up to 90 days after expiry, although filing late risks legal consequences. File early — the safest window is the 30-60 day pre-expiry slot.

Can I work in Spain on the renewed NLV?

No. The NLV remains a non-lucrative permit at every renewal — it explicitly forbids work in Spain. To shift to remote work, you would need to switch to the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) or a work-authorising permit.

What happens if my renewal is rejected?

You have a 30-day window to appeal (recurso de alzada) or file an administrative-judicial appeal. A rejection without appeal triggers exit obligations. The most common rejection grounds are insufficient income proof, expired health insurance, and over-absence.
