A digital certificate (certificado digital) is your secure online ID for dealing with Spanish authorities. It allows you to sign documents, file taxes, manage residency paperwork, or check your social security records — all without visiting an office.
CostaLuz Lawyers can guide you through obtaining, installing, and using your Spanish digital certificate safely and correctly.
What is a digital certificate?
A digital certificate is an encrypted electronic file that proves your identity online.
It’s issued by an official certification authority (Autoridad de Certificación) such as the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT) and allows you to:
- Sign official documents electronically.
- Submit applications or forms to Spanish administrations.
- Access and manage tax (Agencia Tributaria), social security (Seguridad Social), and immigration portals.
- Authorise or delegate representation (for example, your lawyer).
- Access your health, pension, or residency files securely.
Think of it as your electronic NIE — same authority, but faster and 24/7.
Who can obtain one?
Anyone who has a valid NIE (foreigner identification number) and proof of legal residence in Spain can get a digital certificate.
This includes:
- Spanish citizens.
- EU citizens living in Spain.
- Non-EU residents with residence cards (TIE).
- Legal representatives of companies or associations (via a corporate certificate).
Steps to obtain your digital certificate (individual version)
1. Online application
Go to the FNMT website and start the application for a personal certificate (certificado de persona física).
You’ll need:
- Your NIE number.
- First and last name exactly as shown on your residence card/passport.
- Email address for notifications.
The system gives you a unique application code (código de solicitud) — keep it safe.
2. Identity verification in person
Within 10 days, visit an authorized office to verify your identity.
You’ll need:
- Original passport or TIE.
- Your application code.
- Some offices require an appointment (cita previa).
Authorized offices include:
- Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria).
- Social Security offices.
- Town halls (Ayuntamientos).
- Government delegations (Subdelegaciones del Gobierno).
CostaLuz Lawyers can arrange this appointment and accompany you if you prefer.
3. Download and install the certificate
After verification, you’ll receive an email link to download your digital certificate.
Download it on the same computer and browser you used for your application.
It will install automatically into your browser or system keychain.
We can help set it up securely on your devices.
4. (Optional) Export your certificate
You can export a backup copy (.pfx) protected by a personal password to use it on multiple computers or sign remotely.
Validity and renewal
- The certificate is valid for 4 years.
- You can renew it online during the 60 days before expiry — no need to re-verify your identity in person.
- If it has expired or been revoked, you must repeat the process.
Corporate or representative certificates
If you represent a company, foundation, or community of owners, you’ll need a certificado digital de representante.
CostaLuz Lawyers can:
- Check your eligibility.
- Prepare the power of representation (poder notarial).
- Manage the FNMT registration and legalisation if you operate from abroad.
Common uses

- Signing rental contracts, powers of attorney, or notarial documents online.

Security tips
